Assistant Lecturer Darya Shorsh Hamad from the Department of Anesthesia, College of Health Sciences at Cihan University-Sulaimaniya, has published a new research article in the Journal of Scientific Reports. This study, titled “Tuning the optical band gap of polyvinyl alcohol via aqueous nitrogen-doped carbon dots: a sustainable nanocomposite approach,” investigates a simple and green method to modify the optical, structural, and dielectric properties of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) by incorporating aqueous nitrogen-doped carbon dots (ANCDs) derived from 4-aminoantipyrine (4AA).
The research demonstrates that strong intermolecular interactions—specifically hydrogen bonding between the PVA chains and the surface functional groups of ANCDs—effectively disrupt the polymer’s crystalline structure, reducing its crystallinity from 29.69% to 22.21%. This structural modification facilitates the generation of localized electronic states, resulting in a substantial narrowing of the optical band gap from 5.42″ eV” (for pure PVA) down to 2.90″ eV” at the highest ANCD loading. Additionally, the nanocomposite films exhibit enhancements in both the refractive index (increasing from 1.18 to 1.24 at ∼800″ nm” ) and the real dielectric constant (rising from 1.3 to 1.8 at ∼800″ nm” ), highlighting their potential for sustainable optoelectronic and photonic applications
