The Department of General Education is considered an academic program keen on the quest for excellence in teaching, learning, and community service for the production of wide-ranging and dedicated teachers and leaders who can well respond to the challenges of Education in their community. The program focuses on standardized levels of modern educational technology consistent with social awareness of working in educational institutions in both the public and private sectors. The department accepts graduates of high school from both scientific and literary branches. The duration of the study is four years after which the students receive a certificate of Bachelor in general education.
Vision:
To be the first choice in the Kurdistan Region for preparing English teachers who are ready for the classroom on the day they graduate.
Mission:
The General Education Department prepares graduates to teach English in schools, institutes and kindergartens. We combine language study with teaching practice, so that students leave with a strong command of English, the ability to plan and deliver lessons, and the skills that employers in education and beyond ask for: communication, digital tools, working with people, and continuous learning.
Aims:
1. Produce English teachers with the language level, subject knowledge and classroom skills that public and private schools need.
2. Give graduates a second route into work: language institutes, translation and language services, educational administration, and content and training roles.
3. Link every course to a skill that appears in job advertisements in the Region.
The Department of General Education provides foundational knowledge and transferable skills that support students across all disciplines. Courses build critical thinking, communication, digital literacy, and civic awareness. Graduates leave with a well-rounded academic base that strengthens their performance in specialized fields and in life beyond the university.
Objectives (what a graduate can do):
• Use English confidently in speaking, writing, reading and listening at a level suitable for teaching.
• Plan, teach and assess English lessons for children and adults, using modern methods and learning technology.
• Explain how languages are learned and apply that knowledge to real learners (applied linguistics, phonetics, second language acquisition, educational psychology).
• Design tests, mark fairly and give useful feedback.
• Manage a classroom, work in a school team and communicate with parents and administrators.
• Use digital tools, including AI tools, for teaching, materials and administration.
• Carry out a small study on a teaching or learning problem and present the results.
• Prepare a CV, a professional profile and a job interview, and start a small education business or private tutoring practice.
Where our graduates work:
• English teachers in public and private schools (primary and secondary), the main route.
• Teachers and trainers in language institutes and private tutoring centres, including exam preparation (IELTS, TOEFL) and business English for companies.
• Kindergarten and early-years English teachers.
• Translators, interpreters and language-service staff in companies, NGOs and government offices.
• Educational administration and coordination in schools and training centres.
• Content writing, editing and social media in English for companies and media.
• Customer relations and reception roles in companies that work in English (airlines, hotels, banks, international organisations).
• Further study: master’s degrees in ELT, applied linguistics, education or translation, in the Region or abroad.
