The Department of Medical Microbiology was established in 2021-2022 within the College of Health Sciences, Cihan University-Sulaimaniya. Medical Microbiology is considered one of the main fields of the basic Medical Sciences which has a major role in the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases. It is our responsibility to build well-educated trainees in the field to build a healthy society for now and future generations. There is a bachelor’s program in the Department of Medical Microbiology now. The duration of undergraduate study is four years and granted a bachelor’s degree in Medical Microbiology. The programs of the department qualify the students to prepare graduates to work in clinical laboratories in hospitals, clinics, industry, and research laboratories. It provides a didactic and clinical experience that enables the student to work in the whole subfields of Medical Microbiology including Virology, Bacteriology, and Parasitology.
The Department of Medical Microbiology focuses on the study of microorganisms and their role in human disease. Students learn to identify pathogens, perform susceptibility testing, and apply infection control practices in clinical settings. Graduates support public health and clinical diagnosis by ensuring accurate detection and management of infectious diseases.
Graduates will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of microbial classification, structure, and physiology.
- Perform microbiological techniques for the identification of pathogens.
- Conduct antimicrobial susceptibility testing and interpret results.
- Apply molecular and immunological techniques in microbial diagnostics.
- Apply principles of infection control and prevention.
- Demonstrate safe laboratory practices in handling infectious agents (biosafety).
- Interpret microbiological data to support clinical decision-making.
- Understand epidemiology and public health aspects of infectious diseases.
- Apply quality control standards in microbiology laboratory testing.
- Demonstrate professional ethics and commitment to continuous learning.
