The Department of Translation in Cihan University – Sulaimaniya is one of the outstanding departments, as it is the corner stone of this university. The study has begun in the Department in the academic year 2018-2019. The students are given different materials in Translation studies, Language and Linguistics, and Literature. It qualifies the alumni to be translators, English teachers, and employees wherever translation is needed. They are also qualified to continue their higher education for the M.A and PhD in Translation studies. The text books and materials have been chosen carefully to cope with the latest development of international universities in the world. The staff members work together to create a typical learning and teaching atmosphere as one team and as a family.
The department provides its students with modern issues in translation, English Literature, Linguistics, and other language skills. The department’s curriculum is chosen according to scientific criteria, taking into consideration the development in the fields of language and translation. A particular attention is paid to the practical side of the study to train the students to be efficient translators.
The Department of Translation aims at establishing a distinguished qualified department with high international standards. It attempts strongly to provide the suitable atmosphere of teaching and learning that motivates its students to achieve the objectives of the department in serving the society and being aware of the cultures of different parts of the globe.
This program prepares students to translate and interpret between languages accurately and professionally across legal, medical, technical, and literary domains. Students develop strong bilingual proficiency alongside skills in modern translation technologies. Graduates are ready for careers in translation agencies, media, international organizations, and interpretation services.
Graduates will be able to:
- Translate written texts accurately between English and Kurdish/Arabic across various fields.
- Apply knowledge of translation theories and methodologies.
- Demonstrate proficiency in both source and target languages.
- Apply specialized translation skills in legal, medical, technical, and literary texts.
- Use computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools and translation technologies.
- Demonstrate skills in interpretation (consecutive and/or simultaneous).
- Apply editing and proofreading skills to ensure translation quality and accuracy.
- Demonstrate cultural competence and sensitivity in translation practice.
- Apply professional ethics and standards in translation and interpretation practice.
- Engage in continuous professional development in translation studies.
