On November 13, 2024, junior students from both the English Department and the General Education Department at Cihan University- Sulaymaniya gathered for a special screening of the BBC movie adaptation of The Scarlet Letter, the American novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The event, part of both departments’ ongoing efforts to introduce students to classic literature through visual media, offered a modern interpretation of one of America’s most renowned cultural tales. The novel explores themes of religion, women’s perspectives, and the tension between tradition and individual desires.
Following the screening, students participated in a discussion led by faculty members, analyzing the film’s adaptation of the original text and its thematic elements. The session provided valuable insights into Hawthorne’s distinctive writing style and his commentary on human nature and sin, while also encouraging students to critically evaluate the use of film as a medium for literary adaptation. The event underscored both departments’ commitment to fostering a deeper understanding of literary works across multiple formats.
