The translation department held an international workshop entitled “what makes a teacher effective”. The key speakers at the workshop were Assistant lecturer Bahra Jalal Taher from Cihan University in Kurdistan (Iraq), and Assistant Lecturer Mary Eppolite from Mahidol University International College in Thailand.
Both speakers were colleagues during their Master’s program in the USA. Both speakers share characteristics of effective teachers according to what they study during their program. Mary focused primarily on reflective practice and explains how the best way to be an effective teacher is to think about and reflect on your practice. Bahra focused on other traits like being passionate, connected, organized, flexible, dynamic, empathetic, creative and open-minded.
It is clear that teachers play a crucial role in the lives of students by providing them with the knowledge and skills required for work and life. No one can deny the role of teachers in shaping students. There is a paradigm shift in concept, purpose and delivery of education that university teachers should be aware of. The shift is from teaching to learning.
