The department of English language held a workshop entitled “the relationship in studying linguistics and literature in B.A courses”. The key speakers of the workshop were Asst. Prof. Dr. Mukhalad Malik from Cihan University, and Asst. lecturer. Rezheen Nawzad, from Slemani University. The speakers in this workshop focused on the relationship between the courses of linguistics and literature which are taught at the department of English. Students usually need practice to further promote their language capabilities and use of the grammatical structures and how to use new vocabulary in meaningful contexts. Linguistics subjects can’t simply provide a context for mastering the parts of language, but at the same time interesting and meaningful discussions and arguments are a prerequisite to develop the understanding of the students. Poetry is one of the subjects that expand students’ understanding and expressing skills in a controlled and academic manner. It allows the students to think about the meaning of the poems and use all of the linguistic abilities to express their understanding in an academic way but this cannot be achieved without basic knowledge of linguistics. It also gives students a chance to explore the past centuries and relate the social, political, and religious contexts to the poems written during those eras. Studying poetry can also help students understand the literary techniques and figures of speech and use them for a greater impact on their listeners and/or readers. In fact, literature and linguistics go hand in hand to develop the performance of the students at various levels in their academic process. They are both inseparable, each one has its own specific role to enhance the level of the language. It should be noted that each one helps the other but it is important to know how to use them properly so as to have a better level of language performance. The aforementioned points were the main aims and points of the workshop.
