Cihan University Sulaymaniyah’s Architecture Department graduates achieved a commendable fourth place in the Qalat Awards, an esteemed architectural competition organized by the Kurdistan Center for Arts and Culture. Their winning project, Echoes from the Past, reflects a profound effort to preserve the cultural and architectural heritage of Sulaymaniyah city.
The project focuses on the Shixan neighborhood, one of the oldest areas in Sulaymaniyah. The name “Shixan” originates from the prominent families known as (bînamalei shix) who historically resided there. Sadly, this historic neighborhood has faced extensive degradation, with many of its significant houses either damaged or demolished, often converted into garages. Without intervention, (Shixan) risks losing its distinct identity along with its rich historical and cultural significance.
A centerpiece of the project is (Male Jwaneke), a house once renowned for its architectural beauty. Currently, the structure is uninhabitable due to severe deterioration. The project’s vision highlights the urgent need for preservation efforts to prevent (Male Jwaneke) from suffering the same fate as other historic structures in the neighborhood.
The project was designed and visualized by Ahmed Othman and Marwa Rizgar, demonstrating a commitment to blending architectural innovation with cultural preservation. Competitions like the Qalat Awards emphasize the importance of such initiatives in safeguarding heritage and inspiring future architects to address pressing conservation challenges.
