On Monday, the 12th of February 2024, second-stage students of Medical Microbiology Department under the supervision of Dr. Avin Muhammad Rauf had the opportunity to visit the Hematology Laboratory at Mercy Medical Center in Sulaimaniya. The purpose of the visit was to enhance understanding of hematology and its practical applications in a clinical setting. During the visit, Students had the chance to observe various procedures and tests conducted in the laboratory. They witnessed the process of collecting blood samples, followed by their preparation and analysis using automated analyzers. The staff explained the significance of different parameters such as complete blood count (CBC), hemoglobin levels, and differential white blood cell count. Furthermore, Students were introduced to the different types of blood smears and were shown how to prepare and stain them for microscopic examination. They learned about the identification and classification of different blood cells, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The staff also demonstrated the interpretation of blood smear findings in diagnosing various hematological disorders. Additionally, Students were given a demonstration of special tests such as coagulation studies and blood typing. The laboratory staff explained the importance of these tests in diagnosing bleeding disorders and determining blood compatibility for transfusions.
All in all, the visit to the Hematology Laboratory at Mercy Medical Center was an enriching experience for the second-stage students of Medical Microbiology. It provided them with valuable insights into the practical applications of hematology and its role in diagnosing and monitoring blood-related disorders. The department of Medical Microbiology is grateful to the Dr. Avin Muhammad Rauf, The Lecturer of Hematology, and laboratory staff for their guidance and hospitality, which made the visit both informative and enjoyable.
