On Saturday, November 30, 2024, second-stage students of Medical Microbiology at Cihan University -Sulaimaniya had a scientific trip to Dukan Water Treatment Plant-2 in Dukan district. This scientific visit was organized under the supervision of Assist. Lecturer Barham Qasim.
The primary objective of this trip was to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. By exposing students to real-world water treatment processes, the visit aimed to enhance their understanding of how microbiological concepts are applied in ensuring water safety and quality, fostering a connection between their academic studies and real-life practices. During the visit, students observed key stages of water treatment, including coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, and chlorination, which transform raw water from Dukan Lake into potable water for Sulaimaniya City. The students toured the facility’s advanced Microbiology Laboratory, where they were introduced to various microbiological techniques and tests critical for assessing water quality. The laboratory staff highlighted the importance of monitoring waterborne pathogens and explained the role of microbiology in preventing and controlling waterborne diseases. This hands-on experience enriched the students’ practical knowledge and emphasized the crucial role of water microbiology in safeguarding public health. The trip underscored the importance of continuous water quality assessments and treatment efforts in protecting community well-being.
