On October 12, 2024, Cihan University hosted a workshop titled “Reducing Stress and Preventing Burnout,” aimed at promoting self-care practices among teachers, faculty, and staff. It was presented by the psychotherapist Sara Pearce and Assistant Lecturer in English department Shang Jamal. The session highlighted the importance of self-care in combating stress and avoiding burnout, particularly in academic environments.
The workshop began by addressing the nature of stress—its causes, symptoms, and impact on mental, social and physical health. Participants discussed how stress, while a natural response to challenges, can become overwhelming when not managed effectively. Burnout, a key topic, was described as the emotional exhaustion resulting from prolonged stress. The session explored the signs of burnout, such as detachment, fatigue, and reduced job satisfaction, encouraging participants to recognize these symptoms early. Practical self-care strategies were introduced, focusing on mindfulness, physical activity, setting boundaries, and the importance of breaks. These methods were demonstrated as simple, yet effective tools to help maintain well-being and prevent burnout. Attendees also learned about maintaining a healthy work-life balance, using techniques like time management and prioritizing leisure activities. The workshop emphasized that self-care is essential for both personal and professional success.
In conclusion, the workshop provided valuable insights into managing stress and preventing burnout, offering practical tools for maintaining mental health and well-being in challenging academic settings.
