At the beginning of the symposium, Mr. Sirwan, Director of Quality Assurance Unit of Cihan University, welcome three speakers: Mr Samih Hamood, International Certified Quality Management Auditor from Lebanon. Mr Jamal Ahmed Kareem, a lecturer at Cihan University, Mr Ghareeb Salih, Reliable International Trainer at Nostalgia Institute. Mr Ghareeb as a keynote speaker of the symposium gave chance to Mr Samih to start his subject on the impact of the ISO 9001: 2015 Quality Management Systems to Organizations. He explained the practical benefits of the ISO to organizations obtained ISO 9001 compared to those which have not. He also provided every detail of standards ascribed in implementing the rules and regulations.
Then, Mr Salih let Mr Ahmed to present his title on “the basics and elements of applying quality system.” He, at first, introduced the term quality and the factors related to achieving quality. He also mentioned the role of effective management in applying the system. He exemplified his argument by a bottle of water which can be distinguished from other products by a point- quality. People’s decision can be made based on good quality. Thus, high quality can be a successful property of a product or service and this decision gives success and continuity of an institution.
Furthermore, Mr Salih has presented his topic on “The Important of ISO 9001 Quality Standard in Higher Education.” He provided historical background on ISO 9001L 2015 and reasons behind creating the international standards of ISO and how they have been changed over the years. He also mentioned what if the educational institutions decided to have ISO 9001: 2015 Quality Management Systems. He also illustrated the structure of ISO Quality Management Systems as they composed ten points and many clauses. He highlighted on the preventative action not corrective action. He suggests that people who are in top management of higher education have to be proactive ، not reactive .
Finally, Mr Salih let the attendees address their questions; Mr Rebwar Muhammed Zainadden asked Mr Samih how long does it take to obtain the certificate? Mr Samih replied to the question as it depends on the institution. Some institutions can achieve in three to four months. Some want six to a year. The process starts with taking a course by professionals from Nostalgia Institute which has being a pioneer in upgrading for ISO training courses and granting the certificate as a partner of Sustainable Management Group authorized by International Accreditation Forum. Then, if the institute prepared the mandatory requirements which will be assigned by an ISO consultant, the auditor will attend a day for first auditing, and then gives an opportunity like three to six months to be prepared for the second stage. If all documents, manual and all standards were met by an institute. This means they are ready for stage two to obtain the certificate. He also said “ the whole process can be done through Nostalgia Institute based in Sulaimany and Sustainable Management Group in Lebanon authorized by IAF in Canada. Then, Mr. Sirwan raised a question on the real practical benefits of ISO 9001 or it is just the matter of prestige. Mr Salih answered the question as it is true some institutions want just to have it as prestige and prestige cannot be achieved unless there are perfectness and ISO 9001 is more than the matter of showing your prestige, but it is more about management reforms which an institute needs to have if not then they will lose many customers in the future.
Finally, Dr. Jamal from Cihan University explained the basics and elements of ISO. He focused on the fact that ISO process will also improve the quality of the products and it is a step towards the standardization of the quality of the products.
