Student Activity: Toward a More Sustainable Campus through Innovative Design and Practical Application
On 6th Dec 2022, the Department of Translation at Cihan University Sulaymaniyah organized a workshop entitled ‘Efficiency of Kurdish Language in Google Translation; Challenges and Opportunities.
In the workshop, the first speaker Mr. Bokan Jaf, Founder of Google Crowdsource Association in Iraq and Kurdistan Region, and the second speaker Mr. Moemin Yasin Mohammed Amin, lecturer at the Department of Translation at Cihan University Sulaymaniyah presented their topics. Lecturers and students attended the workshop.
Bokan Jaf, pointed out the process of starting and activating the Kurdish (Central/Sorani) section of Google Translate. He also mentioned the fact that a number of young volunteers in the Kurdistan Region worked hard developing the section. The founder described the progress that has been made in the system so far. He described the process of adding sound system as an important achievement.
The second speaker at the workshop, Dr. Moemin Yasin Mohammed Amin, a lecturer in the Department of Translation at Cihan University in Sulaymaniyah, talked about the challenges and opportunities of using the Google Kurdish language (Middle/Sorani). Dr. Moemin explained that this system provides good opportunities for students and researchers enabling them to benefit from international scientific resources available.
He also spoke about the impact of the collective role of lecturers, intellectuals, students and researchers to help improve the system using it properly. Finally, the presenters confirmed that the Google Kurdish language (Middle/Sorani) service is regarded as a linguistic treasury for the Kurdish language in order to formulate language policy for the Kurdistan Region.
