On November 6th, the English Department at the University of Sulaimani organized a scientific trip to the General Directorates of endowments Central Library. The purpose of the visit was to explore historical handwritten texts and literary heritage, offering students an immersive experience in understanding the context behind Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel The Scarlet Letter. In the novel, the narrator discovers handwritten documents in the Salem Custom House, which inspire him to begin writing the story. The trip aimed to help students connect with this aspect of literary history and deepen their understanding of the novel’s themes.
During the visit, students had the opportunity to examine rare and ancient texts, with the oldest book on display being around 600 years old. The library also houses exquisite versions of the Quran, some of which are beautifully written and decorated with gold. The students engaged in thoughtful discussions with the librarians and were particularly eager to learn more about the preservation and significance of these historical texts.
The library staff, including Ms. Kawsar, the director of endowments Central Library, warmly welcomed the students and answered their many questions. Ms. Kawsar expressed her support for the students’ academic endeavors and offered extended access to the library’s resources for future visits, facilitating their continued learning process.
The trip was supervised by Ms. Tafan Kamal Kareem, a faculty member in the English Department, who guided the students throughout the visit and helped make the experience educational and memorable. This enriching experience not only provided students with a deeper appreciation for literary heritage but also fostered an opportunity for academic exchange and networking within the community.
