The department of English language has organized an international workshop entitled “Inspiring Female Characters in English Literature: Classics vs. Contemporary “on October 28th, 2023. The workshop was presented by Tafan Kamal Kareem, Asst. Lecturer from University of Cihan Sulaimaniyah and Mazhar Ali, Lecturer from University of Turbat. It was a collaborative effort between the two universities that dived deep into the portrayal of inspiring female characters in English literature: focusing on the juxtaposition of Jane Austen’s iconic characters, Elizabeth Bennet (Pride and Prejudice) and Emma Woodhouse (Emma), with JoJo Moyes’ famous female characters Alice Wright (The Giver of the Stars) and Liv Halston (The Girl You Left behind).
The discussion began with an exploration of Austen’s Elizabeth Bennet and Emma Woodhouse, highlighting their timeless qualities of independence, wit, and resilience. These classic characters served as a foundation for understanding female strength and autonomy in early the 19th century.
In contrast, the contemporary characters of Alice Wright and Liv Halston from JoJo Moyes’ novels were examined, showcasing the evolution of female protagonists. Their determination, ambition, and ability to break traditional norms offered a modern perspective on female empowerment through literature.
The workshop also underscored the importance of continued progress in portraying strong women in literature and media. It emphasized that feminism aims not to make women strong but to challenge and alter society’s perception of women’s strength, enabling a more inclusive world where gender equality thrives. This revelation reminded participants that there is still much work to be done in changing social perceptions and providing role models for future generations.
