Lazya Ali Mahmood Muhamad, a student from the Department of Translation at Cihan University Sulaimaniya, participated in the 5th International Conference on Scientific Studies in Social and Human Sciences, presenting her research titled Challenges Faced by English-Kurdish Interpreters and Translators in Iraqi Kurdistan. The paper provides a detailed analysis of the linguistic, cultural, and contextual obstacles that interpreters and translators face while navigating the intricacies of communication in this politically complex region.
Supervised by Dr. Momen Yaseen M. Amin, Head of the Translation Department, Lazya’s study is based on qualitative research, where she conducted in-depth interviews with ten professional translators. Her findings revealed the pervasive difficulties translators encounter, ranging from syntactic differences between English and Kurdish to the unique challenges of interpreting idiomatic expressions and cultural references. Translating historical and political texts posed another layer of difficulty due to the region’s sensitive socio-political context.
The research delved into the various strategies translators adopt to bridge these linguistic and cultural divides. Participants, with academic qualifications ranging from bachelor’s to Ph.D. levels, shared their insights on managing these challenges, underscoring the importance of language proficiency and deep cultural understanding.
The paper concludes with suggestions for enhancing the quality of translation services in the region, calling for improved language education and better tools to support translators working in this vital field. Her presentation at the international conference highlighted the importance of translation for fostering greater intercultural understanding in Iraqi Kurdistan and beyond.
