On 19/12/2018, a seminar was presented by Dr .Nahedh Taha Al-Qemaqchi, entitled ‘concept parametricism in architecture’.
It’s a little bit confusing when talking about concept in architecture since it is a disturbing term (especially for junior students and beginners in the field of architecture) concerning with a lot of elements (ideas, abstractions, intention, invention, notion, theory, conviction, opinion… etc). The main objective of the seminar is to reach a suitable definition to the term throughout the common use of the concept into architectural zone.
The famous literature about the subject done and discussed by several researchers but the very famous and comprehensive books concerning with the term were (introduction to architecture 1979 by James Snyder, and Design in Architecture 1980 by Geoffrey Broadbent).
The discussion of the term of concept focuses on what Broadbent highlight in his hierarchy of the concept generation and the different types of these concepts that usually used by different architects to translate their ideas about the projects.
The four types of concepts which form the map of the term on the mind of either students or professionals in the field of architecture were (analogy, pragmatic, iconic, and canonic concepts). These types tried to the entire morphology of the ideological work and thus tried to shape the massages of architects to others.
Analogy concepts take place when the architects try to get a similarity between the source which form the reference and the target which represent the solution. These sources are either natural or man made within some characteristics could be borrowed to be applied into the solution.
Pragmatics concepts focus on the problem solving with deep functional orientation, so the main goal of such concepts mainly oriented to the organization of the masses and relation between these masses.
Iconic concepts are more abstract because thy try to reflect a certain ideology or a convectional vision, either locally or globally to give some story or hints about the original icon representation.
Finally, the canonic concepts which mean the roles or laws-oriented solutions.
