Asst. Prof. Dr. Hastyar H. Najmuldeen and Asst. Lecturer Alan O. A. Shwan from the College of Health Sciences, Cihan University–Sulaimaniya, have published an article in The FASEB Journal.
This study provides new population-based evidence on the prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency and how it varies across different age groups and genders within a healthy population in Sulaymaniyah City, Iraq.
The research evaluated serum vitamin B12 levels in 427 individuals aged 1–89 years using a chemiluminescent immunoassay and categorized B12 status as deficient, borderline, or normal. The results show that 38.7% of participants had vitamin B12 deficiency, with the highest prevalence among adults (41.4%) and the elderly (42.6%). Children demonstrated the highest mean serum B12 levels and the lowest deficiency rate (12.2%), while adolescents showed intermediate values.
A significant decline in serum B12 concentrations with age was observed (p < 0.001), along with a weak but statistically significant inverse correlation between age and vitamin B12 levels (r = −0.1806, p = 0.0002). Although mean serum B12 levels did not differ significantly between males and females in adults, deficiency was more common among males (50%) compared to females (37.7%).
These findings highlight age as a major factor influencing vitamin B12 status and emphasize the importance of targeted screening and preventive strategies to reduce deficiency-related health risks in the community.
Cihan University–Sulaimaniya congratulates Dr. Najmuldeen and Mr. Shwan on this important scientific accomplishment and their contribution to advancing public health research.
