Dr. Anvar Soleimani, Head of the Medical Microbiology Department; Assistant Lecturer Darya Shorsh Hamad, Lecturer of the Medical Microbiology Department; and Lab Assistant Sina Khalil Ismael, at the College of Health Sciences, Cihan University-Sulaimaniya, have published a research article in the Jundishapur Journal of Natural Pharmaceutical Products. This original article provides biochemical properties of Gazo, focusing on its carbohydrate, amino acid, and protein content to provide a scientific foundation for its nutritional and medicinal value. Gazo, or oak manna, is a natural exudate of Quercus species formed through insect activity. Although traditionally valued as a sweetener and folk remedy in Kurdish culture, its biochemical composition and health potential remain poorly defined. Our research showed that Gazo is rich in digestible sugars and essential amino acids, particularly branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), but contains minimal protein and no complex carbohydrates. These findings support its traditional use and suggest its potential in nutritional, functional food, and health-related applications.
The journal is an ISI journal with an impact factor of 1.2, indexed in Scopus (Q3), and a Cite Score of 1.8. The article can be found in the following links:
