Researchers from the College of Health Sciences at Cihan University-Sulaimaniya — Asst. Prof. Dr. Hastyar Hamarashid Najmuldeen, Dr. Nozad Hussein Mahmood, Lab Asst. Sima Rahman Qadir, Lab Asst. Sina Khalil Ismael, have published an article in the esteemed International Journal of Microbiology. This research article explored a recent cholera outbreak in Sulaymaniyah City by analyzing 1,200 stool samples from patients at Shar Hospital between July and October 2023. They confirmed that 347 people (28.9%) were infected with Vibrio cholerae, the bacterium that causes cholera. Most infections occurred in August, with young and middle-aged adults being the most affected. The study revealed that women were slightly more affected than men (55.6% vs. 44.4%). The reported strain of cholera was genetically similar to one previously reported in Kuwait, indicating that it may have entered the region through tourist travel from southern Iraq. Worryingly, the bacteria showed 100% resistance to several common antibiotics such as amikacin, amoxicillin, and trimethoprim, highlighting the urgent need to update treatment plans.
This research is important for understanding how cholera spreads and how to better treat and prevent future outbreaks. The findings support the need for better water sanitation, closer monitoring of antibiotic resistance, and faster public health responses.
Cihan University-Sulaimaniya is proud of its researchers for addressing such a critical issue affecting the health of our community and contributing meaningful solutions through science.
