On Sunday, January 12, 2025, the Translation Department of Cihan University-Sulaimaniya hosted an international workshop titled “The Power and Precision of Journalistic Translation.” The event brought together scholars and experts to discuss the challenges and opportunities in journalistic translation, with a special focus on Kurdish media and the impact of technology.
The workshop featured three distinguished speakers:
Mr. Hakeem Dawd Qaradaghi from Leicester University participated virtually via Google Meet. His presentation, titled “Kurdish Media: Manipulating News Translation for Political Purposes,” examined how Kurdish media outlets often adapt translations to align with political agendas, shaping public narratives based on their ideological leanings.
Assistant Lecturer Aziz Raouf from Cihan University-Sulaimaniya delivered a talk on “The Ideological Challenges of Journalistic Translation.” He highlighted the complex ideological barriers faced by translators working in Kurdish media and emphasized the critical role of objectivity and accuracy in politically sensitive contexts.
Assistant Lecturer Nawroz Muhammad, also from Cihan University-Sulaimaniya , presented “Technology and AI in Journalistic Translation.” Her session explored the transformative impact of technology and artificial intelligence on translation practices in both international and Kurdish media. She highlighted how these tools offer efficiency while raising questions about cultural sensitivity and precision.
The workshop served as a dynamic platform for knowledge exchange and professional dialogue, shedding light on the evolving landscape of journalistic translation. The Translation Department at Cihan University-Sulaimaniya reaffirmed its commitment to advancing research and fostering academic discussions in this vital area.
